Canoe and Kayak Rentals
The Higher Pursuits Duck River Canoe Base is located just minutes from downtown Columbia, TN and features canoe and kayak trips on the beautiful and scenic Duck River.
The Duck River winds its way through Maury County, the Yanahli Wildlife Management Area and the Duck River State Natural Area. This makes all our routes feel remote and unobstructed by houses and roads. There are gorgeous gravel bars, rock bluffs and beautiful scenery throughout. All of our paddling routes are an easygoing Class I with very few swift spots. We offer several paddling routes.
The Duck River was designated as a state scenic river and blue way because of its diverse wildlife and historic mill sites. To learn more about this unique and beautiful river visit our Duck River Information page.
Our canoe and kayak rentals feature quality boats, exceptional service and a family friendly atmosphere.
We recommend calling ahead for reservations or booking online to ensure boat availability

We welcome fisherman and can accommodate an early drop off or pick up if you call a few days in advance. The Duck River features wonderful fishing for Small Mouth Bass, Large Mouth Bass, Blue Gill, and other Black Bass species. You will need to have a current Tennessee fishing license with you if you are fishing or assisting others with fishing. In addition to renting canoes for fishing, we also rent Fishing Kayaks ($50 rental fee) and are a Jackson Kayak Dealer and a Perception Kayak Dealer.
Types of Boats We Rent
Higher Pursuits offers a variety of kayaks for rental. When you arrive at our location we will walk you through the types of boats available and help you choose a boat that will best fit your needs. Below is a picture and description of the types of kayaks we rent. When you make your reservation, let us know if you would like to reserve a particular kayak model.
Single Person Kayaks ($30 Rental Fee)
Comfortable and light-weight Sit Inside kayak. It is stable, turns easily and is a great choice for both novice and experienced paddlers. This is a great choice for kids as well because it is lightweight and narrow enough for most 10 year olds to reach the water with the paddle.
Weight Capacity: 275 lbs
The Jackson Riviera is a sit on top kayak with a deceptively comfortable molded seat. It is a very stable boat that turns on a dime and can take you anywhere on the river that you want to go. One of our most popular rental boats.
Weight Capacity: 300 lbs
Jackson Tripper 12
The Tripper 12 is also very popular with our paddlers that needed to put a child/pet in the boat with them or just need a boat with a little bit higher weight rating. It is a very stable boat and features a large, open cockpit allowing more room for gear or a child. It also features the Jackson Elite Seat. Its open design makes it easier to get in and out of the boat. This boat also has the highest weight capacity of our fleet. We have a limited number of Trippers available so when you make your reservation let us know if we need to hold one for you.
Weight Capacity: 375 lbs
Two Person Kayaks (Tandems) ($45 Rental Fee)
Jackson Riviera Tandem
The Jackson Riviera Tandem is a two person kayak that is incredibly stable and easy to paddle. This is a great boat for families that want to put an adult in the back and a child in the front or for a group of friends that want to paddle together instead of individual kayaks. The Riviera tandem rents for the same price as a canoe, $45 for the boat.
Weight Capacity: 450 lbs
Single Person Kayaks for Kids or Small Adults ($30 Rental Fee)
Jackson Mini Tripper
The Jackson Mini Tripper is specially made for kids. It is a narrow boat the allows kids to reach the water, but is incredibly fast and stable. It's open design helps first time paddlers feel comfortable in the kayak and allows them their own storage space for their gear. We recommend this boat for kids 8 years and up. The perception impulse also works well for kids as they grow out of the mini.
Weight Capacity: 120 lbs
Perception Prodigy XS
The Prodigy XS is a stable, fast boat that kids love. It is comfortable and easy to manuever. We recommend this boat for kids 8 years old and up. When you come to the canoe base we can let your child sit in the prodigy and then Jackson Mini Tripper and help your family decide which is the best option for your child.
Weight Capacity: 150 lbs
Fishing Kayaks ($50 Rental Fee)
We have a limited number of fishing kayaks available so reservations are required. We normally have two per model type. Also, any of our fishing demo kayaks are available for rental, but we only have one of each model so reservations are required.
Jackson's best ‘moving water’ fishing kayak. The Coosa is made to cater to the river angler. It is small enough to get into tight places, but stable enough for standing. It is an ideal kayak for rivers, creeks, small lakes and ponds. It's hull design makes it easy to turn and get into tight places.
Weight Capacity: 350 lbs
Jackson Coosa HD
This ‘heavy duty’ fishing craft boasts amped up specs/features and is slightly longer and wider than the original Coosa; this makes it even more stable and a perfect fit for anglers of all sizes or those who are really looking for a stand up fishing kayak. The hull is still river friendly, but the HD will track truer on the flat waters of lakes or inshore saltwater.
Weight Capacity: 425 lbs
The Liska is wider and more stable than the Coosa. It also features the hi-lo ergo seat. This boat tracks exceptionally well and is a nice clean platform for fly fishing or bait casting. It also feature track systems on the gunnels, large stern storage area, and molded in rod holders behind the seat.
Weight Capacity: 350 lbs
